School Age Summer Care
To keep the fun going, AGC provides care over the summer for children ages 5 to 10 (See the Preschool Wrap Around Tab for summer care for preschoolers). We are open from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. Even though we are open for 11 hours, a child can be here no longer than 10 hours. Parents must bring their child into the school age room, regardless of age. Summer care is located in the same room before and after school takes place. Staff utilize the Family Life Center, the Shueyville Community Center and the church's large yard to provide various areas to the children. Another way staff keep things interesting and fun is by planning weekly themes and events. For example, carnivals, ocean, and sports. Some events may includes, a weekly field trip, bike day, guest speakers and water day. Transportation for field trips is provided by College Community School District. Every Wednesday, our church leader speaks with the children. They shares a story, ask questions and gives the children time to speak and ask questions. Every other day, a staff member will do something similar to that to share the word of God. Our summer staff are current and past employees. Their shifts stay relatively similar all summer long to keep consistency for the kids.
To help enhance social skills, AGC utilizes PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). This is a center-wide discipline program that provides tools for schools to use to help their students gain appropriate behaviors in school environments but as well as outside of school. We have contracted with Preferred Food Services of Coralville to cater daily lunches for the preschoolers in wrap around care. This is an option for our school agers as well! Your options are: bring your child's own lunch daily, or eat provided lunch daily. AGC will continue to provide milk, regardless of the option you choose. If you choose to have your child eat a provided lunch, we will wrap the cost into tuition payments. AGC also provides a snack in the morning and in the afternoon, along with milk or juice for lunch and snack. The children will have time to rest, they can lay on a mat or read a book. This gives them time to take a break from each other and have quiet time. As you can see from the schedule, there are planned activities, but the staff do not force the children to participate. They are at the age where making their own choices is important and the staff value you that. There are times where the children do have to participate and that is during group time and bible time.
